The Lit Squad x Indigo

Full disclosure: I have a 'love-hate' relationship with reading. As a kid, my parents forced me to read Hooked On Phonics. I can appreciate now that this was purely for my own benefit, but at the time I despised it and them. Beyond my childhood years immersed in educational phonics, I then went on to spend seven years in post-secondary education. Year-after-year, I continued to loath reading my textbooks for institutional and educational purposes. Don't get it twisted,  I loved many aspects of university and I love learning, but I was always more of a hands-on student or the one engaging in meaningful debate during class. Now that my days as a student are behind me, I'm beginning to find excitement again in reading for pleasure. That is, reading the books I'm interested in and on my own terms.

So, when I was approached by my friend Meghan Young to join a book club in partnership with Indigo, it took me a few moments before deciding to jump on board. What I have come to love about book clubs, as this is my first foray into book club culture, is that there is a social component to it - the wine sangria definitely helped. But alcohol aside,  getting to meet up with four other incredibly talented creatives to debate everything and anything that made our brains hem and haw while reading our first book was inspiring.

Our first novel was a memoir by the creator of Nike, Phil Knight, titled Shoe DogIf you haven't read the book yet I'm inserting a *spoiler alert*, as there is a beautiful video of our first book club meeting. Enjoy!
